Mathematics Success for Maddi

Mathematics Success for Maddi

Maddi Ruth has joined the Year 8 Student Mathematics Community which is based at the Exeter Mathematics School (EMS). This community is formed with a single selected student from a range of schools across Cornwall, Devon, Dorset and Somerset.

The aim of the community is described as:

“Teachers frequently identify students within their settings who stand out from the crowd and who can find themselves working in isolation on mathematics that is beyond that of their peers. Our aim is to bring these students together, to enable them to work with peers who are similarly able, to provide stimuli which will deepen and broaden their appreciation of mathematics and its related fi elds and to support and encourage their development as problem-solving mathematicians.”

The launch day saw Maddi travel to Exeter by train accompanied by Mrs Gardiner and then walk up to the Royal Albert Memorial Museum. A fascinating museum full of artifacts collected by local adventurers. The headteacher of EMS welcomed all the students and accompanying adults and then challenged Ben Sparks to entertain and educate us all.

We then walked to the actual school and finally returned home by train. Maddi will be venturing up to Exeter four or five times a year to enjoy workshops until the end of Year 11.

What a treat for her and well done on being selected!
