Students Experiment with SpectroscopyUniversity of Plymouth PhD students Kat and Anthony, introduced our Year 13 students to Spectroscopy! This is a method of identifying complex chemical compounds by studying the interaction of light and matter. Students had nine unknown samples to try out the new analytical technique on, they identified functional groups then carried out some calculations to identify the compound.
This technique is used by students at The University of Plymouth to identify different oils found in sea water and identify chemicals found in the soil. The experience was an amazing opportunity as the equipment that the students used was worth over thirty thousand pounds!
