Hospital Ward Gets 'Wonderful Makeover'During the Easter break students swapped their pens for paint brushes and took part in a hospital makeover. For the second year running we worked with WOW Plymouth who teach students fi nancial skills and budgeting as well as employability skills such as teamwork.
With funding obtained from the National Lottery the students were able to select a community project that would enable them to gain experience in how to plan, time manage and work together whilst learning about everyday financial issues such as direct debits, standing orders, loans etc.
They opted to redecorate and refurbish the Hartor Ward at Derriford. This is a dementia ward for male patients over the age of 60. Throughout the process the team liaised with staff at Derriford Hospital to ensure they stuck to the design brief which was to produce a nautical themed room. This involved painting throughout, installing a new kitchen, providing new furniture and soft furnishings whilst keeping track of their spend and taking into consideration the needs of the patients. The planning process took six weeks with a two hour session each week. The makeover itself took just two days and was a total transformation.
The students involved were: Micha Gill, Joanne Watson, Katie Lyons, Amy Bingley, Adelle Dodd and Ryan Gilmore.
We had the following feedback from Ward Sister Teresa Beer:
"Hello there Sarah, I just wanted to say a big thank you, to you and your students for a wonderful makeover of the day room. It is truly wonderful and has already received some rave reviews from staff , relatives and patients. It is great to see it all over Twitter and Facebook which is fantastic. So thank you yet again for all your time and dedication to the project.
