Do it yourself student decorators at a Plymouth school are calling upon local businesses to help transform a patient’s room at Derriford Hospital. Pupils at Sir John Hunt Community Sports College are looking for any soft furnishings, plants or furniture that can help provide a makeover to the room on the Brent Oncology Ward. The room is currently used by cancer patients and families as a respite area away from the busy ward and is a much needed break away space.

Sarah Slater, careers co-ordinator at the school said students were looking for things that will make the room feel warm and inviting, allowing families to relax and enjoy quality time.

"We are appealing for as many items as we can get," she said. "We would like anything that will make the room feel relaxing and homely with items such as cushions, pictures, flowers, furniture, anything that would make it a special place for families to visit."

Mitie Paints are the first company to come to the students’ aid, offering paint and decorating tools as well as practical help from a team of professionals, while Wiser Wonga are offering the team support and advice.

Mrs Slater continued: "This is a wonderful way for our students to work with local businesses and to really make a difference to the community. As well as doing something good, the students are learning valuable practical skills as well as the sense of achievement and satisfaction you obtain through carrying out an act of kindness."
