Post 16 Training in Laboratory SkillsTanya and Ryan are the first students to take part in a new SJH training programme. They are based with me in the preparation laboratory where they are being trained in techniques such as microbiology, microscopy and glass working. Here are their views on the programme so far:
"I was thrilled when Mr. Dunkerley, Head of Sixth Form, approached me and asked if I would like to spend some time in the preparation lab; of course I jumped at the opportunity! The course so far has allowed my love for science to run wild and continue to grow out of control! In any session Mrs Heard never fails to make the unit fun and interactive for both me and Tanya. The most important thing that Tanya and I have learnt so far is that there’s no such thing as failure – you’re simply discovering ways that don’t work."
“I am finding the training even more interesting than the practicals I do in medical science. The organisation of the workbook and guide is brilliant, easy to follow and informative. This has definately inspired me to want to work in a lab based environment. Ryan and I have named the group Lab Rats and we have a motto by Thomas Edison, 'I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work'."
