English covers the skills of reading, writing, speaking and listening, and is at the heart of students' experience at Sir John Hunt.

In Key Stage 3, students follow schemes of learning exploring a range of literary texts from Shakespeare to Charles Dickens as well as poetry, non–fiction and media texts.

We encourage them to become confident readers, writers and speakers, able to communicate convincingly with a range of different audiences.

Alongside the curriculum, students in year 7 & 8 also participate in the Accelerated Reader programme to further boost their engagement and ability in reading.

In Key Stage 4, most students prepare and follow GCSE courses in English Language and English Literature. This builds on the skills developed in Key Stage 3, with students' performance measured by a combination of controlled assessments and examinations.

In Key Stage 5, students can go on to study a combined A–Level course in English Language and Literature, successful completion of which will give them access to a wide range of higher education opportunities.

We also offer a range of exciting extra–curricular opportunities, from BBC School Report to performance poetry, to enrich and extend students' learning.
